NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. It is essentially the study of human excellence working through the mind, speech, and behavior.

“NEURO” refers to how we think and perceive the world in which we live. Our brain processes our experience through our neurological nervous system. The 5 doors of our nervous system that we use to perceive the world are—eyes, ears, touch, smell and taste.

Of all the 5 senses we have, we have our preferred senses as well as our inferior senses. People think and communicate more using their own preferred sense-channel.

“LINGUISTIC” means how our brain processes language and how we are influenced by language. We are influenced by how we talk to ourselves as well as how others talk to us. Some of these linguistic influences are very obvious, but most of the linguistic influences are being processed unconsciously.

In the realm of self-talk, it serves to help us or hinder us. And in the realm of communication, the right kind of speech pattern will give you the right kind of response that we want.

“PROGRAMMING” refers to how we become who we are through learned experience, habits, and beliefs. The key word here is “learned”, we are who we are today because we learned it. Invariably, whatever we learned served a purpose. Sometimes it will be a useful purpose. Other times it is completely ridiculous.

The study of NLP is how we can use our mind, senses, speech pattern and our internal programming to re-engineer human excellence.
